Smart Cruise Control Operation

Have searched the owners manual and features guide for my Telluride and have played around with the steering wheel "mode" and "cruise" buttons but still trying to figure out whether the cruise control can operate in a "normal" mode without the SCC engaged. I use cruise control a lot but would prefer not to have the SCC engaged. Thanks.

after turning on, but not setting the cruise control, press and hold for 3 seconds the distance button for CC, that will put it in normal cruise mode, then set the cruise control.
