Oil Charge @5k miles? Why?

I just got back from being ripped off at Kia of Carson for almost $300 for an a oil change and other minor nonsense (checking for minor things and a tire rotation) and they tel me to come back after 5k more miles for yet another oil change. The question is why? I thought syn oil was to last longer!
