Hello. So I have been doing some research and the following website explains the: performance and pros & cons of the Telluride engine. NOTE: the Lambda 3.3L, 3.8L, etc are in the same family. It states the engine has a life expectancy of 180,000 miles but can be as low as 150,000 πŸ€”. I have 159k on my current vehicle. I tend to keep my cars for awhile.

What are your thoughts on the engine life expectancy OR experience with a Kia vehicle hanging on for the long haul? Thanks in advance.

I had an 07 3.8l V6 sorento with 340,000 miles on it and dad is still driving it. Also had 14 Sorento SXL with 300,000 that still drives great but sold it for current Telly

180,000 miles is longer then the average life of most cars. The average is 8 years and 150,000 miles.

Most Gas Direct Injection engine will have a short life expectancy due to Intake valve deposit. My 2020 3.8l Telluride has very heavy carbon deposit at the tail pipe and my gas mileage has dropped at 2,245Km or 1,394miles. I will probably have the valves cleaned every 12,000miles using a DGI spray cleaner. I use Shell mid-grade gas and Castrol Synthetic oil. I think Hyundai and Kia should have both DGI and Port Injection were several manufacturers have started to use in 2019.

You are johnny on the spot with oil changes. You have 1,394 miles and already changed the oil. Good for you.

As for the op. The article you cite offers now real sources. When you google the text, it seems to be copied an paste from weird pdf's. There is a difference between life expediency and actual how long it will live. Most cars are crushed at 200,000 miles. They just are. Could they go 300,000 miles with few major problems, sure. But are not allowed to.

Lets go to your source, which I think is shady has heck, but lets go with it.

Toyota highlander. 150-200k miles.

Toyota Camery, 200k.
http://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=77
Toyota 4Runner 150-200k
http://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=75

So, just looking at the number, I would say the sites "estimate" is more of a guess.

The only new vehicle I know that still uses Port Injection is the Jeep Wrangler 3.6 l engine, they do offer 4 cylinder DGI Turbo. But for short drives or slow speed stick with Port Injection. Just my logical opinion. I had no problems with my 3.3l Port Inj. Santa fe most people I know had problem with their newer 3.3l Direct Injection.

Your 3.8l v6 most likely has Port Injection. Using good quality fuel will help keep Intake Valves clean since the fuel is sprayed on the valves, Not so for a DGI engine. Just saying. Please correct me if I'm wrong since I love to learn new things al the time no matter what subject.

The valves in most modern direct injectors don't really build up much carbon unless....
1.) You don't use top tier gas.
2.) You don't do oil changes by manual or driving condition.
3.) You reprogram the tuner.
4.) You drive in stop and go traffic in which the engine never really gets to rev up.

If you use top tier gas, do proper maintenance, don't "sport tune" your car, and don't drive in low rpm traffic without being able to rev up the engine, carbon build up MIGHT be a problem.

You already changed your oil at less then 1500 miles, so I don't think you are at risk.

I agree with you entirely. Just got back from a 60 miles drive use sport mode for 10 miles to increase my RPM my gas mileage is to what I was getting when new. So it is good once in awhile to rev the engine for few miles. This will certainly help in reducing carbon deposit. This engine loves high revs, I've learned not to baby it. All new to me DGI.

I use Top Tier gas only should I go back to 87 with e10 or mid grade 89 with e5 or 91 with 0 ethanol. Dealer recommend 6,000 Km oil change as opposed to 12,000 Km according to the owners manual.

Kia has designed the engine and I would they they know better. I think your dealer is just trying to make profit on extra needless oil changes. They know you will rarely visit the service department with the 100K warranty.

let me put it another way, my Telly 8s my 5th Kia and change oil @ 7500 miles and have 32,000 trouble free miles so far. Had '07 sorento that currently has 345,000 miles and still runs as goot as it did new (gave to my dad) he is still driving it and it has never had any engine issues or been on shop for repairs. Had '14 sorento with 300,000 miles with no engine issues or repairs (traded on Telly) but still ran great. Also have '12 & '13 forte's with over 70,000 on each with to troubles with either. All Kia's changed @ 7500 miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic in '07 and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic in others. None have been in the shop for engine repairs
