Just read this on Car and Driver

  • The 2020 Hyundai Palisade has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
  • A family-friendly mid-size three-row SUV, the Palisade earned the score of Good in all of the agency's crashworthiness tests, plus a score of Superior for its standard driver-assistance features.
  • Kia's Telluride–a corporate cousin to the Palisade–was rated highly as well, but it missed out on the "+" due to poor-performing headlamps in IIHS's tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has bestowed its Top Safety Pick+ award on the 2020 Hyundai Palisade after the SUV excelled in the agency's battery of tests. The Palisade is the seventh vehicle in Hyundai's current lineup to earn the agency's most prestigious award.

It should come as no surprise that the Palisade–a new SUV on which we've heaped praise since its debut–would do quite well in crash tests. After all, it was designed and engineered in the modern age of high-strength steel, crumple zones, and driver-assistance features.

Still, not every brand-new vehicle makes the cut for Top Safety Pick+, which requires a rating of Good in all of IIHS's crashworthiness tests as well as Advanced or Superior scores for collision-avoidance features and well-performing headlamps. The Palisade managed just that, although the headlamps of lower-level SE and SEL trims managed a score of only Marginal.

The Subaru Ascent–a key rival for the Palisade–and the Kia Sorento are the only other three-row mid-size SUVs to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award. The Palisade's corporate cousin–the Kia Telluride–was also highly rated by IIHS, although it carries only a Top Safety Pick (without the +) award after its standard and optional headlamps failed to produce a Good result.
